The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) has officially released results from the 2021 Main Residency Match! This year 42,508 applicants applied to 38,106 available positions and 94.8% of those positions were filled. Of these spots 35,194 were available PGY1 positions with 33,353 positions being filled. It’s no surprise that IMGs had the most Matches in the Internal and Family Medicine category. But what does feels surprising is the 743 available spots in Internal and Family medicine that went unfilled. And last year in the 2020 Match a combined 722 spots went unfilled. Total, there were 1927 unfilled positions in 2021 and 1892 of those spots were offered in SOAP, leaving 35 available residencies inevitably unfilled. What are your thoughts? Does the pandemic have a role in these empty spots? Are applicants not utilizing their ranked lists to their advantage? Is primary care undervalued and under-glorified? Does the NRMP algorithm work?
