    I can attest to this Phil. I remember studying and doing study blocks. I had days where I was blazing, 90,86, 95, 100, 92 94, etc. I felt like I was ready. THEN, BAMMM 48!!!! It was a very humbling experience. However, it also shows that you have more work to do that there is still some missing pieces that you have to put together.

    I like to compare this to training or working out. If you don’t push the boundaries and eventually fail at a rep or getting a 1 rep max, then you really are stunting your own growth. It’s good to get out of your comfort zone and approach material that you are weaker in. In order to be a well rounded person/physician we have to make our weak areas our strength. Analyzing and assaying my weak areas and working to make them my strengths was motivation.

    I developed an active recall system that uses a hierarchy of importance that allowed me to use spaced repetition and active recall. Reviewing in spaced intervals with active recalls moves information from temporary or short term memory to long term memory and if you are even lucky it can almost become subconscious!

    I found that proper planning and incorporating downtime was pivotal in my success on both the COMP exam and USMLE Step 1. Many times as student we become so zealous in our endeavors that we overlook the overall effects of the process.

    Proper planning. Proper planning. PROPER PLANNING is going to be the key to success. Making a REALISTIC study schedule and allowing time for unpredictable changes will not only keep one track with your studies but also prevent burn out. Peaking at the right time (i.e. COMP and STEP) is the aim. DON’T plateau TOO early or TOO late.
