The three basic causes of atelectasis are obstruction (i.e. resorption), compression and contraction. The presentation, diagnosis and management of each is discussed. Acute respiratory distress syndrome correlates with the pathology of diffuse lung damage and an PaO2 / FiO2 ratio of <300. These are correlated to the etiology, pathophysiology and natural history of ARDS.
